INDEX is a bimonthly exhibition listings calendar for contemporary art in galleries, institutions and project
spaces, published and edited by Kirsa Geiser since 2002. The printed edition of the listings calendar is
available at all participating venues in Berlin as a fold-out pamphlet, while the continually updated online
version of INDEX can be consulted at indexberlin.de. The idea behind INDEX is to provide a clearly organised selection of the most important contemporary art exhibitions in Berlin in a compact format for professionals and the gallery-going public. The selection of exhibition venues is determined by the editor together with a jury. In order to offer a straightforward aid to navigating the world of contemporary art in Berlin in a way that suits people’s individual requirements, INDEX deliberately doesn’t feature opinion, criticism and interviews.
Various features available on the mobile and desktop versions of the website are likewise intended to help you plan your visits to exhibitions throughout Berlin according to your own wishes: As well as categorising shows by exhibition type (galleries, institutions, private collections, further exhibitions) you can choose to view Venues by district. Closing soon gives you a chance to catch exhibitions you may otherwise have missed, while Plan a tour makes it a lot easier to plot an itinerary around the city. On the mobile site you can even email a tour with up to ten venues to friends. The sections Openings and events and What’s on today are already indispensable when choosing which day and
evening events you’d like to attend. If you’re looking for a specific artist you can check out Artists on view. When you need a break we have that taken care of, too, in Places to eat and drink. The listing of exhibitions in galleries, institutions and project spaces is complemented by a selection of cross-disciplinary talks, presentations, films, etc. gathered under the rubric Other Events. In addition, INDEX has long been informing its readership about upcoming openings and other events in Berlin via the newsletter INDEX Weekly, sent out at the beginning of each week – you can subscribe at indexberlin.de/newsletter. The cover of each issue of the printed A5 size listings calendar is always designed by an artist based in or exhibiting in Berlin. All of the covers to date – by artists ranging from Sergej Jensen to Natalie Czech to Tobias Zielony to Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili – are archived on the website at indexberlin.de/downloads.
After many requests, INDEX now offers selected artists’ editions for sale. INDEX editions can be viewed and ordered
